Happy 177th anniversary to my native birthland, Liberia. Oh, how I loved and missed this great land located on the West Coast of Africa. If you ever have the opportunity to visit Africa, please reach to Liberia and enjoy the warmth hospitality and delicious cuisine of the Liberian people.

Liberian cuisine is a fusion of African American, and Caribbean flavors. Some of our popular dishes include:

  • Jollof Rice – a one-pot dish with rice, vegetables, tomatoes, spices, chicken, shrimp and beef.
  • Fufu – a boiled and pounded cassava or yams, served with soups or stews.
  • Pepper Soup – a spicy soup made with meat, seafood varieties, peppers, spices, seasonings and vegetables.
  • Grilled Fish & Meat – also known locally as “roasted meat/fish” – is marinated with spices, seasonings and peanut sauce.

Liberians also enjoy plantains, cassava leaves, torborgee, potato greens, palava sauce, gravy and okra-based dishes. In terms of hospitality, Liberians are known for their warm and welcoming nature. Guests are often greeted with a smile, a handshake, or a hug. Respect for elders and tradition is deeply ingrained in Liberian culture. Liberians take pride in their community and are eager to share their culture with visitors.

Overall, Liberian food and hospitality are characterized by warmth, generosity and a strong sense of community. Visitors often comment on the welcoming nature of the Liberian people and the delicious flavors of the local cuisine!
